Anti-wind farm group ramps up campaign

By Suzanne Pender | Carlow Nationalist | Monday, February 08, 2021 | carlow-nationalist.ie

A second virtual ‘town hall’ meeting will take place tomorrow night for those objecting to a controversial wind farm proposed for Mount Leinster.

Entitled ‘Save Mount Leinster from an industrial wind farm’, the meeting will take place on Tuesday 9 February, from 7.30pm to 9pm. It’s the second such virtual meeting to take place in the past week.

The purpose of this town hall meeting is to discuss and support members of the community as they make their objections to this proposal to build a wind farm in the Blackstairs Mountains.

The community meeting will be helmed by professional facilitator Chris Chapman. Chris has years of experience in physical and virtual ‘rooms’ and will guide participants through the video conferencing format, with a view to getting the most from the conversations on the night.

This will mean splitting the big meeting into smaller groups every so often.

Register for this meeting by sending an email to [email protected] and a Zoom link will be sent to you. Places limited, so please register.

Doors open at 7.20pm, which will be followed at 7.30pm by a short welcome and introduction.

Mr Chapman will guide participants through the questions they need to ask when making their submissions – in small groups and as a big meeting group.

‘Save Mount Leinster’ was set up in December 2020. Its initial online petition now has more than 2,350 signatures and was set up in direct response to the then-pending application by Coillte for seven 178m wind turbines, proposed at Corrabut Gap/Killbrannish on Mount Leinster.

That application has since been lodged and submissions from the public must reach Carlow County Council on or before Thursday 25 February 2021.

The Coillte application is available on the Coillte website. It can also be viewed at Carlow County Council’s planning department.

The Save Mount Leinster group has also set up a GoFundMe page to support its appeal as well as helping with planning advice and legal costs. See https://savemountleinster.com/
