Wind turbine project pending for Algansee Township

Algansee Township Planning Commission has not met since November, due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Zoning administrator Matt Ashenfelter told the township board Monday the commission must meet soon to deal with an application to construct two large wind turbines at 644 S. Fremont Road.

The towers are not the 300-foot-plus commercial megawatt turbines that have drawn objections in other parts of the county. These at 118-foot towers with base that would produce 150 kilowatts each.

The maximum height is to the tip of the turbine blade.

“They are not huge,” Ashenfelter said. “They are grid-connected with a line that runs through part of that property,.”

The one-third megawatt project would power 30 homes.

The John Grove family has contracted with a company to construct the turbines on the 119 acres where they used to live. They since have moved to Kentucky and rented the farm house. Calls to the family were not returned.

Ashenfelter said the project meets all the criteria of the Algansee zoning ordinance for the smaller turbines. He hopes to have the requested hearing on the project soon.

Matteson, Sherwood and Batavia townships have put in place ordinances to strictly control the large megawatt commercial turbines.

These are the first proposed in the county for the middle category between the large commercial and small turbines for power for individual properties.
