County hosting public hearing over possible wind farm zoning change

Medicine Hat News | February 2, 2021 | medicinehatnews.com

A proposed zoning change required to build a portion of a new wind farm in western Cypress County will go to a public hearing today in Dunmore.

In 2017, Enerfin Canada proposed building the 120-megawatt “Winnifred Wind” facility about 5 kilometres north of the hamlet of Whitla, entirely within the County of Forty Mile.

However, changes in the general design last year mean the eastern boundary would move just across the county boundary into Cypress County.

Two turbine towers and the underground gathering network would be placed on a total of three privately owned quarter-sections, north and south of Township Road 114 at the county’s boundary near Range Road 81.

Production from the entire facility would be connected to the Bullshead substation, nearer to Medicine Hat, meaning the line would run through Cypress County.

On Tuesday, Cypress County councillors will consider changing the quarter-sections to a wind energy overlay district, thereby allowing the turbine development while agricultural activity would continue surrounding several acres needed for above ground infrastructure.

Cypress County council meeting can be live streamed on the county’s YouTube Channel.
