UPC may well be right that the North-West is a good area for wind farms but they are definitely wrong about Robbins Island.
The 300 proposed wind turbines to be built on 100×100 metre concrete footings, will each stand 270 metres high with 220 metre wide blades. The ‘choppers’ would slaughter tens of thousands of mutton birds returning to their nests at Robbins and Walkers Islands each year between September and May.
UPC claimed (Adv., Jan 30) that it does detailed studies and robust assessments. Yet not a mention of the impact on mutton birds in the advertisement in any of its EISs.
Never before has the nature of an island been proposed for such a radical change. From once being the home of Aborigines for thousands of years to an agricultural/mutton bird habitat, if this thing is approved the island will forever be nothing more than a massive wind farm.
By the way, UPC has refused to meet with the Land Council about our concerns.
