Plans for 12-turbine windfarm north of Listowel

The Kerryman | October 07 2020 | www.independent.ie

A windfarm company has been told it must apply directly to An Bord Pleanála for planning permission to erect 12 150m-high turbines on peatland between Listowel and Ballylongford as the proposed development would constitute a strategic infrastructure development.

An Bord Pleanála ruled that the Shronowen Wind Farm plan – with a power output of 50.4MW and slated for the townlands of Tullamore, Ballyline West, Dromlivaun and Coolkeragh – ‘constitutes development that falls within the definition of energy infrastructure’ due to its size, scale and location.

An Bord also ruled that the proposal would be of strategic importance by the requirements of the Planning and Development Act, meaning the file will have to go straight to An Bord Pleanála rather than through Kerry County Council.

An Bord revealed that the site is ‘primarily situated’ across flat peatland where ‘some’ non-commercial turf-cutting continues.

The blade height would be just six metres lower than the massive turbines that are mooted for Finuge.
