How one rural community is hoping a wind farm will ensure its future

50 farmers in Upperchurch, Tipperary, will receive €600,000 annually while a community fund will receive €400,000 | Margaret Donnelly | August 25 2020 | www.independent.ie

Con Ryan’s farm in Upperchurch, Tipperary, has a lot of land that he describes as “hanging up”. That’s a kind way of describing the hilly land between Nenagh and Thurles.

Despite its physical challenges, farmers and the local community have not let this hold them back – in fact they use it to their advantage when they can, including the current plans to build a 22-turbine wind farm in the parish.

The project is facing its final hurdle, having been worked on since 2010. Fifty farmers will be paid €600,000 between them annually and the local community will receive €400,000 each year to spend through a community development fund.
