Amendments to plans for a windfarm just south of Sanquhar have been submitted by Community Windpower Limited.

The Sanquhar II Community Wind Farm was expected to include 50 turbines, but owing to concerns that six of those proposed would affect views in the area, the number has been reduced to 44.

Objections came from both East Ayrshire, and Dumfries and Galloway Council who share the land of the proposed development.

CWL plan to build a 3G Sports Pitch in the Upper Nithsdale area and propose to assist communities in which the farm is located with other initiatives.

Rob Fryer of CWL, said the farm ‘will provide clean, green energy to power more than 335,000 homes annually and would offset more than half a million tonnes of CO2 every year, which equates to 21.8 million tonnes during its 40-year operational life’.

He said: “Additionally, during its operational lifetime [it] will contribute more than £150m to the Dumfries and Galloway and East Ayrshire Councils through business rates, and a significant financial benefits to the local communities, through a community benefit fund of £2,500 per MW of the available grid capacity for the scheme.”
