‘A beacon for hedonists’

Early in 2020 I was disappointed to read from Circular Head Council that they had “wrapped up” their “community conversations” for all regional areas except for Montagu, which faces the most colossal development proposal in Tasmania.
The Robbins Island wind factory proposed by Hong Kong based multinational UPC Renewables may well cement the identity of Circular Head as an industrial hub.
More than 100 proposed 270-metre turbines (untried on land) mooted on elevations of up to 60 metres will be visible 64.9 kilometres out to sea.
The fawning government support for the Robbins Island project despite opposition from scientists, the proximity to other islands and a globally significant habitat for 30,000 birds will surely act as a beacon to attract more development schemes of similar character where corporate hedonists can indulge their wildest resource extractive dreams.
I fear the new “turbine coast” will limit the Circular Head brand and radically redefine the region as an industrial outpost. Simultaneously the community will lose their rich culture affiliated with abundant nature, spectacular scenery and the opportunities dependent on retaining the natural integrity of our North-West islands.
