No new activity on wind turbines in Presque Isle County

ROGERS CITY –Developers with Sstar Ridge-Run Energy have been in contact with Presque Isle County officials, but have yet to submit formal documents for a planned wind energy project.

“There has been no type of application for any type of zoning permit,” Toby Kuznicki, chairman of the county’s planning commission, said.

Kuznicki said the planning commission recently learned a marked-up Google Map had been submitted to county Building and Zoning Official Mike Libby, but Kuznicki did not have any further details about the project.

Libby was unavailable for comment on this story.

No new leases for property for the project have been filed with the county’s Register of Deeds office. Four leases were last filed in June 2017.

Stephen Gust, president of Sstar Ridge-Run Energy, previously told The News a project is in the works in Moltke Township. He said the company started work in June 2017 to ultimately build a 100-megawatt wind energy project.

The proposal has been criticized by some.

The proposed project, along with amendments made to the county’s wind turbine ordinance, prompted two Moltke Township residents to file a petition with the county. They gathered enough signatures to allow some residents of Presque Isle county to vote on whether they wanted to keep the ordinance.

Voters on Aug. 6 ultimately decided to keep it.

The backers of the petition ultimately moved away from the area.

Sstar Ridge-Run Energy has been listed as a domestic liability company with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs since 2017.

The paperwork is filed under a Cheboygan address.

It does not appear to have a public website.

Gust could not be reached for comment on this story.
