Hardin County places indefinite moratorium on wind turbine permits

ELDORA, Iowa – Hardin County supervisors unanimously passed an indefinite moratorium on wind turbine building permits at its meeting Wednesday.

In a 3-0 vote, supervisors passed a resolution placing a moratorium “effective immediately and indefinitely,” on wind turbine permits.

The resolution states that it is placing the moratorium in order to protect a 911 communications tower being built near Hubbard and to protect drainage infrastructure.

It states the county also wishes to prevent and abate “any resulting nuisance from decommissioned commercial wind turbines through more robust decommissioning requirements.”

A wind energy company had obtained easement rights from more than 100 Hardin County landowners before supervisors passed the resolution.

Hardin County is not the first Central Iowa county to make such a move. Madison County enacted a one-year moratorium in October.
