Update: Posey Co. Area Plan Commission passes wind farm ordinance

Members of the Posey County community came out for the Posey County Area Plan Commission meeting to hear what the future holds for wind turbines in the area.

After over 3 hours is deliberation, the Posey County Area Plan Commission passed the ordinance which will act as a guideline for companies that wish to build turbines.

Once an application from a company is formally submitted, the commission will still have the ability to turn down any location for a turbine if they deem it falls too close to a Doppler system.

Noise evaluation will be measured from the home rather than the property line, unless the homeowner does not grant permission for the company to take a sample at their residence.

At this point the measurement would be taken from a point as close to the residence they could get.

A representative from RWE says they don’t have the calculations yet for how far a blade would travel in the event of a turbine failure – a concern addressed by many residents throughout the last few months.

Commission members say they would like more information on how Doppler systems would be impacted from officials with the radar operation center and the department of energy.

At this time, no formal plan with specific wind turbine locations had been submitted.

POSEY COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) – After the public voiced their opinions last week, Posey County officials are set to decide on guidelines for a proposed wind farm.

The Posey County Area Plan Commission is scheduled to vote on an ordinance.

The meeting started at 6PM in Mount Vernon.

The ordinance would set regulations for possible wind turbines, including shadow flicker, turbine height, and property distance.

Concerns have also been raised about windmills interfering with Doppler radar.
