The same downstate firm that has developed a wind farm in Lackawanna along the shores of Lake Erie is negotiating with the City of Buffalo to build a 25-acre solar farm in South Buffalo.

Representatives from BQ Energy Development, headquartered in Wappingers Falls, wants to lease the land at 304 Abby Street from Buffalo to build the solar farm that will be powered by 19,000 solar panels producing as much as 5 megawatts of power.

The site – a capped landfill – virtually neighbors the Tesla plant along South Park Avenue and is not far from the Hydro-Air Components plant.

The project represents a nearly $15 million investment by BQ Energy.According to documents filed with Buffalo, the panels would be secured by a concrete ballast racking system. A transformer and switching gearing systems would have to be installed as the energy would connect into National Grid’s existing infrastructure.Negotiations are expected to be completed soon, city leaders said.
