Rally held against turbines on Lake Erie

Citizens Against Wind Turbines in Lake Erie rallied Saturday morning in Chautauqua County against the placement of “industrial sized” wind turbines in the waters of Lake Erie.

Leaders of the advocacy group cited environmental, public safety and economic concerns about the prospect of turbines being built in the lake. They were joined at the rally by state Sen. Chris Jacobs, R-Buffalo; Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello, a Republican; Evans Town Supervisor Mary K. Hosler, a Democrat; and Erie County Legislators John Mills, R-Orchard Park, and Lynne Dixon, I-Hamburg.

Although no formal proposal has been submitted to area governments, a California-based company is exploring the possibility of an offshore wind farm with 50 turbines off the shores of the Town of Evans as a way to generate more clean energy and reduce carbon emissions.

The rally drew about 50 people and was held at Cabana Sam’s, a bar and restaurant along the Lake Erie shore in Irving.
