Peaceful protests continue against a controversial wind farm in Kahuku.
Construction of the Na Pua Makani wind farm was expected to begin Sunday night, but people against the project managed to block the equipment trucks from leaving a facility in Kalaeloa.
Peaceful protesters also gathered in Kahuku where the farm is expected to be built. They got here around 6 p.m. Sunday night, and even until 6 a.m., people were still there.
They are protesting against the construction of eight wind turbines at the Na Pua Makani wind farm.
Sunday, about 200 protesters gathered in anticipation of construction equipment that was expected to be brought in. But the people there say no equipment has been moved in.
It’s a project by AES – the company says it will generate enough renewable energy for thousands of homes across O’ahu.
Many say they are not against renewable energy, but say the farm is too close to schools. They are also worried about the infrared sound generated by the wind turbines and potential impact to native Hawaiian bats.
