Commissioners to handle short agenda Tuesday

By Jeff Rice | Sterling Journal-Advocate | September 27, 2019 | www.journal-advocate.com

The Logan County Commissioners will dispatch a relatively light work load at their regular business meeting Tuesday.

At the top of the agenda is a resolution that would exempt portable wind turbine manufacturing equipment from property taxes in Logan County.

The resolution would forgive proper taxes between 2020 and 2030 for property “used to manufacture wind turbines or components of wind turbines at the site where the wind turbines will be put into service … so long as the property is used exclusively for that purpose.”

Commissioner Byron Pelton introduced a draft resolution on Sept. 10, explaining that the portable “factories” are needed because wind turbine height has grown to the extent that the pieces can no longer be transported over roads and must be fabricated on-site.

Pelton said exempting the “personal property” from taxation would encourage turbine construction in Logan County and would offer a longer-lasting economic benefit.

The commissioners also will consider renewal of a liquor license for Northeastern 18 at the west edge of Sterling, a right-of-way permit for Xcel Energy for a natural gas line under County Road 35, and the purchase of an automobile for the 13th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

The business meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Commissioners’ Meeting Room of the Logan County Courthouse.
