Truck carrying turbine blade rolls in Tas

A truck carrying a wind turbine blade has rolled in central Tasmania, blocking the road.

A truck driver has had a lucky escape after his vehicle rolled on a rural Tasmanian road while carrying a giant wind turbine blade.

Highland Lakes Road, at Apsley in the state’s Central Highlands region, isn’t expected to be cleared until late on Thursday night.

Inspector Philippa Burk told reporters it’s extremely lucky the driver wasn’t hurt.

“He managed to get free of the truck as it was falling over,” she said.

The loaded truck weighing 60 tonnes toppled around 6.30am after failing to negotiate a left-hand turn.

The blade was being taken to the Cattle Hill wind farm, which will boast 48 turbines when fully built.

Workplace health and safety authorities and Tasmania Police are investigating the crash.
