Company behind rejected wind project in Burke County to submit new application

The company behind a proposed wind energy project in North Dakota struck down by state regulators earlier this year says it intends to submit a new project application in the fall.

In June, the state’s Public Service Commission denied a siting permit for Burke Wind, LLC, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, Inc., for a 76-turbine wind farm in Burke County, amid concerns over the project’s environmental impact.

Game and Fish officials filed a report citing concerns over how the project would impact the state’s prairies and wetlands.

The project also called for a 37-mile-long transmission line that would have transported energy to a substation in Mountrail County.

The commissioners’ ruling marked one of the first times the governing body had rejected such a request.

NextEra released the following statement to Your News Leader:

We continue to work with stakeholders at the state and local level and plan to submit a new application to the North Dakota Public Service Commission this fall. We look forward to building a wind project which will bring great benefits, including good jobs and economic growth to the local area.

It’s unclear at this time how the new proposal would differ from the company’s original plan.

PSC Chairman Brian Kroshus provided the following statement in response to news that NextEra would resubmit:

That is certainly an option the company can pursue. If a new application is submitted, we will review and process it through the proper channels to see if it satisfies siting criteria as defined by law.
