Early proposals could bring wind turbines to Bedford County township

Executives from a private firm met with officials in one Bedford County township asking for approval to repair a weather tower in the area.

Their plan could mean new wind turbines will be coming to the county.

Representatives from competitive power ventures gave a presentation to East Saint Clair Township supervisors Tuesday.

Their proposal would construct a new meteorological tower to replace one located on a ridge in the township.

Measurements taken from the tower would be used to determine if conditions are right for wind turbines.

Representatives presented a sketch plan of the proposed structures to the supervisors.

Officials say data would be collected over a period of six to 12 months and analyzed to determine the power a wind turbine could produce in that area.

Township supervisors informed company officials of the ordinances and safety regulations that had to be met prior to construction but were pleased with the thoroughness of the sketch plans.

Community members expressed concern about the potential environmental and property value impacts of wind turbines being constructed in the area.

Executives admitted the project is still in its infancy and many studies need to be conducted.

Competitive power ventures officials say if the project does take place they believe the ridge could support 10 to 15 turbines.

Representatives expect the studies to take at least one year with construction of any wind turbines beginning in at least two years.
