Carbon County town runs tests for possible wind turbine project

By Dylan Fearon | WOLF | Friday, July 26th 2019 | fox56.com

People who live in Packer Township, Carbon County could see wind turbines in their town

A $150 million project is close to being approved.

Some think it’ll help the environment. Others say it’s an eyesore. Twenty-one wind turbines is on the table.

Four balloons were sent up into the sky by Broad Mountain Wind, to show residents how high the turbines would be- a whopping 656 feet.

“It’s really good for the environment and really good for the economy,” project manager Rob Miller said.

People Friday are checking out the balloon test- wanting to see how far the wind farm would stretch.

Some are visibly upset. They don’t want to have to look at 600 foot turbines overshadowing nature- every time they walk. bike or drive down Quakake Road.

That includes former Carbon County commissioner Tom Gerhard- who can’t believe the zoning board might approve this.

“People are just getting money hungry. This used to be a farming community. Now its turning into a junk farm,” Gerhard said.

But project manager Rob Miller says he’s shown the zoning board evidence that this is the right move, at 10 meetings.

“There are net environmental benefits because it’s clean powers there’s no emissions and there’s potential additional revenue to the community,” Miller said.

Miller said he’ll have to meet with the zoning board at least three more times. He hopes it’s approved by October and can start breaking ground by next spring.
