Island taking steps to seek mitigation money from Vineyard Wind

Eighty-four wind turbines 14 miles southwest of Madaket are at the center of a heated debate between town officials, preservationists, environmentalists and wind-energy advocates.

The focus now is on how the town can secure mitigation money from developer Vineyard Wind for the detrimental visual and environmental impact the project could have on the island.

“Why would they pick the historic waters off Nantucket to put these turbines in, and then tell us we’re not going to see it?” Historic District Commission vice-chairwoman Diane Coombs asked a week after the HDC sent a letter to town energy coordinator Lauren Sinatra in support of ongoing town efforts to seek mitigation funding.
