Pushback against wind turbines in Henry County

Letters to the editor, July 21 | Muncie Star Press | July 20, 2019 | www.thestarpress.com

Henry County (home of my treasured family farm) has fervently battled against an industrial wind turbine invasion for the last 3.5 years.

The Henry County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing Tuesday, July 23, 5 p.m., Bundy Auditorium. Calpine is seeking final approval on permits to build 38 turbines, 499’-ht., covering six townships.

The people do not want wind. Henry County leaders are determined to welcome it.

Promises of wind income are very seductive to financially struggling counties. Same story, different cast wherever wind blows, experienced all too often across this country. Big Wind = Big Money, and the general population takes too long to gather momentum and funds to fight it.

In the 2018 election, we ousted four longtime incumbents with candidates who ran on “No Wind” platforms. All had resounding victories. One of the greatest voter turnouts in the state.

Five towns in the project footprint just filed a pleading against the project. Each town passed a 4-Mile Safety Ordinance to protect their community.

Senate Bill 535 tried to decimate this right of towns to protect themselves. SB535 passed, with an amendment, allowing any signed prior to 12/31/2018 to be argued and, hopefully, to stand up to any wind company’s objection.

Calpine’s entire project is in violation – falls within safety zones of all five towns. Their safety measures are being ignored. The expected Planning Commission approval on Calpine’s CAU permit will be the final step.

We feel the majority are fervently fighting to protect Henry County. We welcome your support on Tuesday.
