Energy company to conduct surveys of ocean bottom off Corolla

A renewable energy company will survey the bottom of the ocean off Corolla this summer and fall in preparation for building an offshore wind farm.

Two boats, one near shore and one offshore, will pull equipment up to 1,000 feet long all day, every day from June 25 to Oct. 15. Fishing vessels should stay at least a mile away and fishing gear should be removed from the area, according to a news release from the wind farm developer Avangrid Renewables.

Avangrid plans to build the wind farm in the Kitty Hawk Offshore Wind Lease Area, about 27 miles offshore from Corolla covering 122,405 acres and stretching about 30 miles. The survey will find out what the seabed and subsurface conditions are like where the wind turbines would go.

Avangrid was awarded the offshore lease in 2017 by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. Two years ago, the company completed a 22,000 acre onshore wind farm of 104 turbines in Pasquotank and Perquimans counties.
