One of the iconic Palm Springs windmills caught fire late Monday afternoon off Interstate 10.
A motorist called the California Highway Patrol just after 5 p.m. and reported the fire.
Palm Springs firefighters rushed to the scene. The blaze did not appear to affect the interstate’s traffic.
About 5:50 p.m., Palm Springs police said that 19th Avenue between McLane Street and Karen Drive was closed because a windmill was spinning out of control.
Some 4,000 windmills blanket the San Gorgonio Pass, where winds regularly blow west to east about 30 mph.
