Reno County Commission rejects wind farm

The Reno County Commission has denied the permit for a wind farm to be built in the southern quadrant of the county.

The vote had to be unanimous and Commissioner Ron Hirst was the lone vote against the wind farm.

For months, residents had expressed concerns about the wind farm’s impact on property values, nuisance issues to homes in the area and some even brought up health concerns for wildlife.

Proponents of the idea said it would’ve brought economic activities to a fairly sparse area of the county, with the corporation involved, NextEra Energy, Inc., promising a financial commitment to schools and infrastructure in the county.

The corporation had planned a wind farm of more than 80 turbines across the southern part of Reno County.

A series of meetings had been held for months for residents to discuss the issue. In April, the planning commission recommended the commission reject the plan.

Supporters told KAKE News Thursday night that they expect NextEra to file an appeal of the decision.
