France has approved 21 onshore wind power projects with a total capacity of 516 megawatts as part of a long-term objective to increase electricity generation from renewable sources, the environment and energy ministry said on Wednesday.

The ministry said 150 new wind turbines will be installed across France in the coming years as part of the project, producing around 1.34 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity annually, equivalent to the consumption of around 268,000 homes.

The ministry said the average price proposed by the winners of a tender process was 63 euros a megawatt hour (MWh) compared with 65.4 euros/MWh and 68.7 euros/MWh respectively at two earlier tenders.

Bids in a fourth tender round, for a capacity of around 500 MW, will be accepted until August 1, the ministry said in a statement. (Reporting by Bate Felix, editing by Inti Landauro and Kirsten Donovan)
