Battle over proposed wind farm in Broome County

A power struggle is brewing over a proposed project for a wind farm in the towns of Sanford and Windsor.

As part of the Bluestone wind farm, wind turbines could be going up. The plan calls for a total of 27 sites in Broome County with 23 in Sanford, and four in Windsor.

Bluestone targeting operations are set to start by the end of next year, but right now it’s a hot button issue of renewable energy that’s heating up for some residents.

“They’re huge, they’re massive, reaching almost 700 feet tall,” said concerned resident James Michalec. “There are all kinds of health issues that these windows have raised, distressed from flicker, noise, giant blades are the largest inland.”

Bluestone says there are benefits, including cleaner air and improved energy infrastructure. Economically, the company says it creates new tax revenue and jobs.

Michalec says normally quiet monthly town board meetings for the town of Sanford have suddenly exploded into sessions of anger.

“Standing room only at these meetings, what will happen tonight, anything can happen tonight,” he said.

You can see the project for yourself at the Bluestone project website.
