City dwellers wouldn’t tolerate wind turbines

The June 3 Dispatch editorial “Energy bailout bill needs Senate changes to truly be clean” was totally off the mark in at least one regard. To wit: “The bill would further hamstring wind power … by giving local townships the ability to overturn approval of new wind projects via popular vote in a ballot referendum.”
Three wind farms planned for Erie, Huron, Sandusky and Seneca counties, together will place nearly 200 wind turbines in the rural landscape. These are not your father’s wind turbines, rather these are enormous machines with moving parts that are taller than any building in Columbus.
I grew up on a farm in Sandusky County, and it breaks my heart to consider the harm these wind farms will cause to the area. The flicker, the noise and the sheer ugliness of the wind turbines would transform a bucolic landscape into a nightmare.
Since when is The Dispatch against local control? Rural Ohioans deserve the same consideration and protections as urban Ohioans.
As Rep. Bill Seitz said during the House floor debate on HB 6, “I guarantee you, all of us big city slickers would not sit still for one minute if someone came along and said they’re going to put a 600-foot-tall moving-part wind turbine anywhere near my property.” Perhaps The Dispatch should reconsider its apparent opposition to local control over rural lives.
