Nextera hearing delayed until June

A special county commission meeting set for next week on NextEra Energy’s conditional use permit application for its Reno County wind farm has been delayed, likely into early June, Reno County officials said late Friday.

County Administrator Gary Meagher said the Florida developer had raised legal questions over some of the protest petitions filed by homeowners in the case.

Residents living within the wind farm footprint filed the petitions in an attempt to force a unanimous vote of the County Commission on the permit application.

Meagher said the issues regard the sufficiency of some of the protest petitions and “will require additional time for county staff to resolve.”

He could not explain the issues, which “are technical things,” Meagher said, and referred questions to County Counselor Joe O’Sullivan, who had already left for the day when the notice went out.

The commission meeting is tentatively reset for 6:30 p.m. June 11 at the Atrium Hotel.

It is possible they will resolve the questions before then, Meagher said, but they wanted to ensure enough time to allow them to be addressed.

“The report from the Planning and Zoning Consultant regarding the sufficiency of the protest petitions related to the Pretty Prairie Windfarm application, that was scheduled to be presented at the (May 21 Commission) meeting will not be available until a future date,” Meagher said.
