Gibco-wind group pushing for alterations in proposed wind farm

The group Gibson County Wind Citizens group, or Gibco-wind for short, held another public meeting Wednesday to discuss the future of wind farms in the region.

German-based energy company E.ON has acquired over 10,000 acres so far in its quest to develop land in southwest Indiana, according to company representatives.

E.ON officials have told the public it is looking to lease around 15,000 acres.

Gibco-wind group members agreed to push for more distance between properties and the turbines, which are called “setbacks.”

They called E.On’s proposed 1,250 ft. setback for an occupied dwelling unacceptable. They’re also concerned about the proposed 550 ft. buffer for non-occupied dwellings.

“This is something that is a huge concern for us as a community,” Scott Fisher, a Gibson County resident said. “The last thing we want is this to tear everybody apart.”

More public meetings will be scheduled, citizen group members said.

County Commissioners were not at Wednesday’s wind farm meeting due to scheduling conflicts.

Many residents agreed they would like to see Commissioners draft and vote on proper zoning codes.

We will continue to follow this story.
