Some Guilford community members speak out against installation of wind turbines in their town

A proposal to construct up to 30 wind turbines in the town of Guilford in Chenango County is stirring up controversy.

A large crowd came out to Guilford’s town hall meeting Wednesday night.

Calpine Corporation, the power company proposing the wind turbine construction, says the project will bring jobs and economic growth to the area while providing clean energy.

Some citizens are skeptical of this idea, saying the project will generate less than 10 jobs and will only financially benefit Calpine. Many are also concerned about the health effects the low frequency sound of the turbines will have on the people and livestock in areas close to the turbines.

“We’re all in favor of renewable energy, but we don’t believe that this has been fully studied, and we don’t believe that they belong in close proximity to homes and to houses and to animals,” says Priscilla Welden of Guilford.

Earlier this year, Calpine’s proposal to install wind turbines in the towns of Windsor and Sanford were met with similar community backlash.
