Plan to put up wind turbines in Carbon County not sitting well with some neighbors

PACKER TWP., Pa. – A plan to put up nearly two dozen wind turbines in Carbon County isn’t sitting well with neighbors.

Dennis Hinkle has lived in Packer Township nearly all his life, and he’s not all that keen about a windmill project on Broad Mountain.

“From the time I was three years old I lived here,” Hinkle said. “We have a nice peaceful valley, we don’t want some kind of chaos, first of all the construction of it, and the look of it, to destroy the scenery.”

County Commissioner Tom Gerhard has his concerns too.

“I am 110% opposed to the project,” Gerhard said.

He, like others in the community, put a sign outside his home to say as much.

Liberty Power wants to put up 21 turbines, most of them 656 feet tall. That’s about two Martin Towers.

Liberty Power touts renewable and sustainable energy.

“Over the course of the year, the wind farm will generate enough power, to power 25,000 homes,” said Robert Miller, Project Manager with Broad Mountain Wind Farm.

Liberty opened up a field office for people to come in and learn more. They’re well aware of community concerns.

“There is no significant human health or environmental impact, there are impacts, and they can be mitigated,” Miller said.

The plan’s expected to cost well over $100 million and could be completed in 2020. It’s now in the zoning process.
