Winds turbine controversy swirling in Carbon County

The winds of controversy are blowing in Carbon County, and it all has to do with a proposed wind turbine farm that has many residents concerned about their quality of life.

Signs like the ones we saw opposing the proposed wind turbine farm dot the landscape in Packer Township and surrounding Weatherly Areas. This is because of plans by the Broad Mountain Power Company to place 21 windmills on the Broad Mountain. Those wind turbines stand nearly 700 feet.

The company is seeking a special exception from the zoning board to allow the wind farm to be erected, but residents are vowing to fight the project.

“Those things are going to be 658 feet to the top of the blade that’s like an Empire State Building, a huge building on top there, and supposed to be 21 of them,” Dennis Hinkle of Packer Township said. “Some people think that’s pretty, I don’t.”

A company spokesman tells Eyewitness News they only want to be a good neighbor and insists the project will benefit the region.
