Evans residents don’t want wind turbines on lakefront

In 2010, the Town of Evans passed a resolution against the New York Power Authority’s plan to install wind turbines in Lake Erie. Since then, we held back GLOW (Great Lakes Offshore Wind) and LEAP (Lake Erie Alternate Power) for similar plans.
The issue has again arisen with the governor’s force behind it. Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Green New Deal includes extensive offshore wind farms.
I recently attended a meeting with the latest developers. The anti-wind audience reiterated the obvious; the bird and bat migration, (including the return of eagles), the limitation for recreational boaters, unreliable wind and the problem with gears dripping oil.
Other concerns are the removal and disposal of aged turbines, maintenance in winter, possible earthquake activity from digging and the flicker and noise that affect both humans and marine life.
The lake bed is made up of shale and there is a distinct possibility of gas or oil in the shale; disturbance could prove disastrous.
My own concern is the trenching of the 50-year layer of sand and clay over the slag dumped by Bethlehem Steel. The upheaval will break the seal and release all the toxins back into our water.
Homeland Security officials informed us that the flicker of the vanes will interrupt the radar pattern and hamper any indication of possible intrusion.
The only “green” in the Green New Deal is the green put into the pockets of the developers.
We can cut down our electricity, but we can’t survive without water.
