An Bord Pleanala gives Coole windfarm the green light

Westmeath Examiner | 29th March, 2019 | www.westmeathexaminer.ie

An Bord Pleanala has granted planning permission for a windfarm on bogland in north Westmeath.

The planning authority has overturned Westmeath County Council’s decision to refuse Element Power permission for the windfarm that will be located in the townlands of Coole, Monktown, Camagh (Fore by) , Doon, Clonsura, Mullagh, Boherquill, and Joanstown.

According to the planning application, the windfarm will consist of 13 wind turbines which will have a tip height of 175m.

In December 2017, the council refused planning permission for the multi-million euro project on the grounds that all but two of the 175m turbines would have been too close to residential dwellings contrary to set back distances in the county development plan.

In a post on its Facebook page last night, the North Westmeath Turbine Information Group said that it was “devestated” to get the news yesterday that An Bord Plenala had given Element the go ahead for the windfarm.

“The fight is on. We will not let them blight the peace and beauty of rural North Westmeath,” the group said.
