Laurieston resident calls for investigation into the health impacts of wind turbines

A Laurieston resident is calling for an investigation into the health impacts of wind turbines.

Paul Swift fears infrasound from windmills is having a detrimental impact on the health of people around the world.

And he has launched a petition calling for the UK Government to set up a study into the problem.

Mr Swift said: “I don’t stay anywhere near a wind turbine but there are a lot of people who do, even though they have objected.

“Infrasound is a major problem and I have been getting emails from around the world as I’ve also set up a world wide petition which has nearly 1,000 signatures.”

He added: “People have been messaging me saying they have had to move out of their house or they have had to move into their basement because of it.

“It needs to looked into and we already have a lot of turbines in Dumfries and Galloway.

“There is so much information out there it is hard to know who to believe any more.”

Mr Swift is involved with the Galloway Against Pylons organisation. However, he was keen to stress this is a personal project and not connected to the group.

He said: “When it is too windy the turbines have to be switched off and the fossil fuel power stations need to be on standby.

“Countries that have a high percentage of renewable energy are places such as Iceland, Nicaragua and Costa Rica and that is because a large part of that is hydro or geothermal because they have volcanoes.”

If Mr Swift manages to get 10,000 signatures by the end of August then the UK Government will have to issue a response.

If he reaches 100,000, it will be considered for a Parliamentary debate.

The petition can be signed online at https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/240535.
