Falmouth Town Administrator Julian Suso updates wind turbine plans

FALMOUTH – A request for proposals will be issued by Falmouth town officials for the two wind turbines located at the wastewater treatment facility.

The proposals would either sell the turbines, lease property out of town, or re-purpose one of the two towers for a different use.

“The board adopted two separate motions. The first was not to operate the turbines in town,” Town Administrator Julian Suso explained.

“The second was to direct the town manager and town council to explore requests for proposals for lease options outside of town, third party interest in purchasing and taking possession to operate them as an energy project to run somewhere else, and the potential cell tower use.”

Suso says the town is expected to have a final plan for the turbines ready to issue by April.

The turbines have been at the center of controversy since they were installed in 2010.

The Falmouth Zoning Board of Appeals issued a cease-and-desist in 2015 to shut down one of the turbines. The second turbine was shut down in 2017 on the orders of Barnstable County Superior Court.

In January, Falmouth selectmen voted not allow the turbines to operate within the town’s borders before voting to initiate the request for proposals.

Building Commissioner Rodman Palmer ordered one of the turbines to be removed in December of 2017.
