Gov. Kristi Noem signs legislation to expand South Dakota wind and solar energy potential

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Kristi Noem has signed legislation that would streamline solar and wind development on state-owned lands.

House Bill 1031 would allow the Office of School and Public Lands to issue one agreement for wind and solar leases or easements under one set of rules. This will simplify the process, which currently involves multiple agreements under different rules. HB1031 will go into effect on July 1, 2019.

“Our economy and security are reliant on an energy supply that is accessible, abundant, and affordable,” said Noem. “This bill takes a step toward expanding the potential of South Dakota wind and solar energy. I’m proud to sign it into law today.”
