Wind farm proposed near Clear Lake

There’s another wind farm proposed in northeastern South Dakota.

The site would be north of Clear Lake in Deuel County.

The developer is a Chicago-based company called Invenergy.

This proposed project is called Deuel Harvest North Wind Farm.

According to the company, the wind farm could provide electricity to 100,000 homes.

The company doesn’t have a buyer for the power yet.

The project would be spread through five townships in northern Deuel County up along South Dakota’s border with Minnesota.

The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission received the project application November 30.

The commission has six months to decide whether to okay construction of the 300-megawatt facility.

There could be as many as 112 wind turbines.

The company also wants permission for a high-capacity transmission line and substation.

The facility would connect to the regional electrical grid through the Brookings-to-Big Stone transmission line.

Otter Tail Power Company would own and operate the project’s substation in Glenwood Township.

The current estimated cost is $400 million. Invenergy wants it completed by the end of 2020 to qualify for a full federal tax credit.

The company has dozens of wind, natural gas, solar and battery projects, generating more than 20,000 megawatts of electricity, located throughout the United States and several other nations.

The commission is scheduled to decide Tuesday whether staff can start work on the application. A public hearing is set for January 24 in Clear Lake.
