Kossuth supervisors hear wind farm concerns

Kossuth County residents had a chance to voice concerns about a new wind farm proposed in the Lakota area during an informational meeting last Tuesday, Nov. 13 at the Eagle Center.

The Kossuth County Supervisors hosted the meeting along with Zoning Administrator Doug Miller, as they were joined by representatives from EDF Renewables and Alliant Energy. EDF is the company working to build the new Golden Plains Wind Farm, and Alliant Energy would operate the farm following its completion.

EDF is seeking approval to install about 60 wind turbines in Kossuth County. Maps distributed at the meeting showed the bulk of those turbines would be in Lincoln Township with 40. There are 13 potential sites shown for eastern Hebron Township, while the remaining seven are in northern German Township.

Miller discussed some of the basics of the project, which would include a mix of GE 2.5 and GE 2.3 MW turbines. He explained the turbines would need to be located at least 1,600 feet from occupied residences and non-residential buildings. Turbines will also need to be located at least 600 feet from adjacent properties. Miller said a few things need to be approved before the project can go forward, including a final development plan.
