Meeting to focus on wind

Township trustees and residents within the effected footprint of a proposed wind turbine project are to have a chance to meet with Seneca County commissioners.

A public meeting has been scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today at the Scipio Township Maintenance Building, located on SR 19 across from the Republic United Church of Christ.

The meeting’s purpose is to discuss the option to intervene on the Seneca Wind project. Area residents will be given an hour to voice their comments – three minutes per person on a first-come, first-served basis.

Those involved in the meeting will be the three Seneca County commissioners, along with Venice, Eden, Reed, Bloom, Adams and Scipio township trustees. Eden Township trustees also approved a resolution asking for the recension of the alternative energy zone.

The meeting is to be moderated by Seneca Regional Planning Commission.

During the public comment portion of the meeting Tuesday, Eden Township resident Diane Hudok said she and her husband live in the footprint of the Seneca Wind Project.

“Wind farms do not belong in Seneca County,” Hudok said. “It is so wrong on so many levels.”

One concern Hudok addressed was the health and safety effects. Hudok spoke of biomedical engineer Professor Marian Alves-Pereira who – along with her team – have been studying low frequency noise world-wide for more than 30 years.

“Industrial wind turbines produce a low frequency noise that the human ear cannot hear,” Hudok said of Alves-Pereira’s study. “Noise itself is a pressure hitting the whole body, not just our ears. Just like we cannot see X-rays, although we know they penetrate the human body, our bodies are adversely affected by IWT vibrations and pressure waves we cannot hear.”

Most of the residents who live in the eastern part of Seneca County would be less than five miles from at least one turbine, Hudok said, according to documents filed by Apex and sPower to the Ohio Power Siting Board.

“Commissioners (Holly) Stacy and (Shayne) Thomas, what are you thinking,” Hudok said. “You have got to rescind the AEZ. Wind companies come to AEZ counties like bees to honey. You are exposing all of us in the whole county to health and safety dangers.”

On another matter, President and CEO of the Tiffin-Seneca Economic Partnership David Zak updated commissioners on the completed parking study that he presented at the Tiffin City Council meeting Monday.

In other news, the board approved:

• A $48,000 supplemental appropriation to the Maintenance and Repair Fund for the Seneca County Engineer.

•An $11,652 supplemental appropriation to the airport fund.

• A $2,330 supplemental appropriation to the County Sewer District Fund

• A $73,240.11 fund transfer to the Victims of Crime Act Grant fund.

• $76,322.60 in increases to the Victims of Crime Act Expansion Fund and $40,519.74 in decreases to the fund.

• Placing the Slingwine-Eberhard tile on permanent maintenance.

• Authorized Seneca County Job and Family Services to transfer emergency services assistance allocation for Family Reunification to Auglaize County job and Family Services and authorized Director Kathy Oliver to sign this and any other related documentation.
