Potential wind farm raises concern in Green County

A potential wind farm is raising concern among residents of Green County.

The plan to install more than two dozen wind turbines near the town of Juda has not yet been approved by county officials, but already, several town meetings have been called to discuss the project.

For families like the Baumans, this project presents a level of concern.

“My initial reaction was disappointment,” said Tammy Bauman, who lives near her parents along a stretch of farmland. “You look out your window and instead of seeing a beautiful horizon, sunrise and sunset, you’re going to see windmills.”

Those working on the project said seeing concerns like these are not uncommon.

“I think a lot of them are driven by anxiety,” said P.J. Saliterman of EDF Renewables in a phone interview. “This is perhaps the biggest change their community has seen in some time.”

Saliterman said EDF Renewables, a global renewable energy company based in California, has done projects like this before.

“This is not new technology,” he said.

However the Bauman says living next to a wind farm is something she never signed up for.

“Go spend some time next to one,” said Bauman. “Look out your window and see how big it is.”

Should the plan be approved, construction could start as early as 2019.
