Poland will not provide support for the construction of offshore wind farms instead expecting the fall in the cost of technology to incentivise new build, its minister for energy infrastructure Piotr Naimski said on Monday.

“Poland simply cannot afford [offshore wind subsidies], Naimski told Polish Press Agency.

Two firms, Polenergia and PGE plan to build a total of 2.3 GW of wind capacity off the coast of Poland’s by 2025. PGE plans an additional 1.5 GW by 2030, while refiner Orlen has said it is mulling a 1.2 GW offshore farm

Experts have assessed Poland’s offshore wind potential at 8-12 GW.

Poland has yet to build wind farms off its coast, but the country’s onshore capacity stands at 5.9 GW.

Coal and lignite provide over 80% of Poland’s electricity.
