“No wind,” says group against Galloo Island wind project

The message is simple… “no wind.”

That message circulated around a rally Sunday held at the Henderson Harbor Yacht Club.

Organizers said they’re against the Galloo Island Wind project for a variety of reasons.

“The windmills, if they are constructed on Galloo Island will harm wildlife,” said Dean Whitmer, president of the Henderson Business and Community Council. “Property values are going to drop for homes that are in the view shed of these windmills.”

The event featured speakers and informational material, including a scale model of the wind turbines.

Volunteers also helped people make comments on the state’s Department of Public Service’s website.

While many people in the crowd oppose the project….

“This is a major flyway for migrant birds. This a very bad idea to have 600-foot towers out there from just the standpoint of migration,” said Gerry Smith.

Others don’t have a stance yet and came out to get information.

“We have property that is near Galloo Island and we’re going to be wondering what this whole project is about and what it’s going to mean to our property,” said Duane Morton.

The event also served as a fundraiser, to help reach the group’s goal of $35,000, which will help hire experts and legal counsel.

“This is a grassroots organization. None of us are experts. We need advice from legal attorneys,” said Whitmer. “We need advice from wildlife experts. We need advice from real estate experts and all of that is costly.”

The project is expected to be approved or rejected by the middle of next year.
