Big rig clogs up Main Street

HORNELL – An automotive artery in the heart of the City of Hornell became congested on Wednesday, when a big rig failed to negotiate a turn.

As many people’s lunch hours began in the Maple City, the intersection of Main Street and Maple City Drive came to a near stand-still at approximately 11:50 a.m.

The truck, which appeared to be loaded with cylindrical containers and covered in plastic wrap, was headed eastbound when it tried to turn north onto Maple City Drive, and failed to negotiate the corner. It was said to be carrying pieces of a wind turbine.

The truck narrowly missed light posts and street signs as it left the roadway and began to spin its wheels in a wet patch of grass just off the shoulder of the highway.

For about 15 minutes, crews manning “oversized load” trail cars tried to manage traffic, while the driver tried to free the truck from the shoulder.

Traffic began to back up in the northbound lane of Maple City Drive, but drivers began to merge and reroute themselves onto Main Street to bypass the commotion.

Eventually, the Hornell Police and Fire Departments arrived to control traffic.

The driver was described by police as “new to the company”.

The truck was freed roughly 20 minutes after experiencing difficulties, but did not leave without further examination by police. No tickets were issued in the incident, and the truck was back on its way to its northbound destination.
