2nd wind blows: Another Adams farm considered

ADAMS TOWNSHIP – The idea of a wind farm around Whealkate Bluff is seeing new interest, though nothing is set in stone yet.

The project plan started and dropped by Farm Wind Energy a few years ago has caught the attention of Circle Power.

The new company has not yet decided if they will take over the plan.

“The moral of the story is it’s just an initial thing,” said Township Supervisor Gerald Heikkinen.

Three representatives from Circle Power visited in July to examine the site area and terrain, he said. The last correspondence he had with the company was about a month ago and was in regard to tax forms. The company must notify him of any moves forward on the project.

“It’s probably 50-50 right now I would say,” Heikkinen said about the likelihood of the project being pursued.

“If they don’t, if they say they’re not going to do it, then it’s dead. It’s a done deal,” he later added.

Heikkinen thinks the plan would follow the previous iteration with seven to nine wind turbines in the area around Whealkate Bluff.

Circle Power would need to renegotiate a lease from Lake Superior Timber, which is no longer in place and work out an agreement with the Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) if the company pursued the wind farm project.

He is unsure what the farm would add to the area in the form of tax value as those numbers are still being looked at but noted that the previous proposal’s numbers were low on the project.

Heikkinen expects to hear more on the project within the next six months.
