Juniata officials who didn’t favor wind ban targeted for recall

JUNIATA TOWNSHIP – In November, residents will have an opportunity to decide whether or not three Juniata Township officials should be recalled.

“The recall petitions submitted on July 31 to the Tuscola County Clerk’s office did contain enough valid signatures to authorize the recall to appear on the Nov. 6 ballot,” said Tuscola County Clerk Jodi Fetting.

Those targeted for recall are Supervisor Neil Jackson, Clerk Heidi Stark and Treasurer Andrew Stark.

The reasons listed on the recalls are because Jackson and the two Starks “failed to enact a moratorium on commercial wind energy systems in Juniata Township.”

As part of the wording on the recall ballot, those being targeted for recall will have an opportunity to give a brief rebuttal of why they shouldn’t be recalled.

Over several months, there has been a plethora of recalls filed against the three township officials that were denied by the Tuscola County Election Commission because of lack of clarity or sufficiency against Juniata Township officials. The wording on the last recall was approved and that is the one that is moving on to be listed on the November ballot.

The controversy fueling the recalls is NextEra Energy Resources’ plan to build turbines in the township for the Pegasus Energy Center wind farm that would tie in with the company’s Tuscola Wind I and Tuscola Wind II and with the Pheasant Run wind farm in Huron County.

Township residents who are interested in running for the office need to complete the proper filing paperwork and submit it to the county clerk’s office before 4 p.m. Sept. 10.
