Neighbors join forces to halt plan to build 275 wind turbines

Homeowners in Adair County are fired up over wind turbines.

Residents said they want county officials to listen and take action.

A group of neighbors joined forces to fight MidAmerican Energy’s plan to build at least 275 more wind turbines in Adair County. The construction is underway just south of Stuart.

Adair residents argue that the projects diminish property values and pit neighbors against each other. The county’s board of supervisors held a special forum this week so the group of neighbors could voice their concerns.

Farmers Steve and Deb Lilly attended the meeting and said it’s time the county implements new zoning restrictions to slow down the construction of the wind turbines.

“I don’t care if some people have windmills,” Steve Lilly said. “It’s just being too close and infringing upon people who don’t want them.”

“They can do just about anything they want to,” Deb Lilly said. “I think that’s a frustration. There are no rules. Most of us have to adhere to some kind of rules, and I don’t think they’ve got rules on this.”

Another open meeting with the county’s board of supervisors is set for Aug. 10.
