Local group urges residents to comment on proposed wind turbines

Dodge County Wind, LLC, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, has proposed a wind energy project in Dodge and Steele Counties of 70 wind turbines and a large electric transmission line from a substation in Dodge County near the Steele County line to the Byron substation. Individual turbines would be located in Havana Township in Steele County and Ripley and Ashland Townships in Dodge County.

The approval process is still in the beginning stages and a local Dodge County citizens group held a public informational session last Saturday in Dodge Center to get information on the project and encourage residents to comment on the project before the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission.

Dodge County Concerned Citizens said the meeting’s primary purpose was to inform county residents about the magnitude of the project and to encourage residents to make comments to the PUC before the public comment period closes on Aug. 10.

In his introductions at the beginning of the meeting, Douglas Eayrs of the citizens group said Dodge County officials have known of the project since January and even though it will impact all in the county there have been no public informational sessions to inform the residents.

He said he really had formed no opinion for or against the project but was concerned about the lack of meetings with Dodge County residents.
