Grant Park wind farm still in works

In August 2012, backers of a proposed wind farm in the Grant Park area presented their idea to the local chamber of commerce in the small Kankakee County town.

Six years later, no wind turbines have been built, but the backers of Grant Park Wind Farm LLC still are pursuing their idea.

In February 2017, the company opened an office in downtown Grant Park, where three people are working full time, meeting with landowners, according to the company’s website.

In 2013, the Daily Journal reported that two dozen landowners had signed lease agreements for the building of wind turbines. At the time, the company said it would build a meteorological tower to record wind speeds.

On its website, the company said it now has “dozens of landowners who have committed thousands of acres to the project.” It described the financial benefits to landowners as “significant.”

The project would be in a high-wind corridor in parts of Yellowhead, Sumner and Ganeer townships, according to the company’s website.

Kankakee County’s zoning official Delbert Skimerhorn said recently that the county had not received an application for the Grant Park project.

Company officials couldn’t be reached for an interview.

Grant Park, population 1,300, is about 20 miles northeast of Kankakee.
