Protect area from wind turbines

Times News | July 27. 2018 | www.tnonline.com

Carbon County is home to three of Pennsylvania’s top-rated and most heavily visited state parks. Hickory Run, Beltzville and Lehigh Gorge State Parks are loved by residents and visitors alike for their gorgeous views of the surrounding Pocono Mountains and unbroken forests stretching all the way to Blue Mountain.

These views could soon be irrevocably scarred by the proposed development of an industrial wind generation facility consisting of up to 37 turbines on 300 acres of deforested land in the Bethlehem Watershed. The 525-foot-tall turbines will be visible to hikers and cross-country skiers in Hickory Run State Park, to cyclists on the 20-mile bike path along the Lehigh River in Lehigh Gorge State Park, and to boaters and kayakers on Beltzville Lake.

Beautiful views such as those currently enjoyed by visitors to Carbon County’s superb park system attract tourism and enhance property values. Our county officials have a duty to protect our parks, including the viewsheds that bring aesthetic, environmental and economic benefits to the residents of Carbon County.
